Palazzo of
the Captain
The Palazzo, built at the start of the 13th century, was the dwelling of the person responsible for public order during the time of the City States. The tower, which is the symbol of the freedom and autonomy of Assisi, was completed in 1305.
The Citadel of
Assisi Maggiore
Rocca Maggiore was probably built on the site of an Umbrian earthwork. In Feudal times, the local chieftains made their home. It was destroyed when Assisi became a free city. Rebuilding started at the beginning of the 14th century, when Cardinal Albornoz, acting on the Pope's orders, overhauled the defensive system of the Papal States.
The Town Hall
The "Palazzo dei Priori" was built in the first half of the 14th century. Since that time it has been host to highest government officials in the municipality. On the facade you can see the coats of arms of some of the governors and of the town of Assisi.
