The
Citadel of
Assisi Maggiore |
|
| Rocca Maggiore was probably built on the site of an Umbrian earthwork. In
Feudal times, the local chieftains made their home. It was destroyed when
Assisi became a free city. Rebuilding started at the beginning of the 14th
century, when Cardinal Albornoz, acting on the Pope's orders, overhauled the
defensive system of the Papal States.
