| The New Square is found in the upper quarter of the city near the city gate,
called "Perlici". The fretwork of streets and alleyways has retained its
typical Medieval appearance. The building are a testimony to considerable
architectural ingenuity.

| Assisi's cathedral, was built in honour of its first bishop, San Rufino. The
facade, which is in the Romanesque style, culminates in a gothic triangular
spire. Its construction was started in the 12th century, and it was consecrated
in 1223. The interior was renovated by Alessi in 1571. In it there is the
baptismal font where San Francesco and Santa Chiara were baptised. The crypt
contains a beautiful Romanesque tomb in which the body of San Rufino was
buried. |

| The New Church got its name because it was built under commission by Philip III
of Spain, on the very spot where San Francesco's family home was. Some of the
rooms have survived, including the socalled 'prison', the small room where the
Saint lived, separate from his father.
