Piazza Nuova
The New Square is found in the upper quarter of the city near the city gate, called "Perlici". The fretwork of streets and alleyways has retained its typical Medieval appearance. The building are a testimony to considerable architectural ingenuity.
The Church
of S. Rufino
Assisi's cathedral, was built in honour of its first bishop, San Rufino. The facade, which is in the Romanesque style, culminates in a gothic triangular spire. Its construction was started in the 12th century, and it was consecrated in 1223. The interior was renovated by Alessi in 1571. In it there is the baptismal font where San Francesco and Santa Chiara were baptised. The crypt contains a beautiful Romanesque tomb in which the body of San Rufino was buried.
Chiesa Nuova
The New Church got its name because it was built under commission by Philip III of Spain, on the very spot where San Francesco's family home was. Some of the rooms have survived, including the socalled 'prison', the small room where the Saint lived, separate from his father.
S. Francesco
Piccolino
According to tradition this was the stable where San Francesco was born in 1182. It symbolises the humilty, poverty and fidelity to Christ's message, which lies at the heart of the life and teaching of "il Poverello". Its interior has a single nave with faint traces of frescoes. These frescoes are witness to the cult which had already grown in the few decades following his death.
Basilica
S. Chiara
The basilica was consacrated in 1265. The facade is banded horizontally in Assisi stone. Its stark simplicity, which bears the imprint of Franciscan austerity, is continued through into the church's interior. In the crypt visitors can honour the body of the Saint, and find, in the chapel containing his relics, the crucifix which spoke to San Francesco.
