Basilica of
S. Francesco
San Francesco is one of the most revered sanctuaries of Christendom. It was built out of two superimposed buildings, the upper one, of Gothic style and the lower one Romanesque. Construction started in 1228. In the crypt you will find the simple tomb wich encloses the body of San Francesco. The greatest artists of the end of the 13th and 14th century were called upon to pay homage to the Saint. Amongst them were Cimabue, Giotto, the brothers Lorenzetti, and Simone Martini.
Quartiere of
S. Giacomo
This district, one of the most characteristic parts of the city, with its houses jutting out onto alleys and streets, has retained its 14th and 15th century architecture. From the small characteristics square of Santa Margherita you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Basilica of San Francesco and the Umbrian plain.
The pilgrims'
Oratory
This is the small chapel of a 14th century hospital. Its frescoed interior displays canvases by Matteo da Gualdo, Antonio Mezzastris, and other fine painters from the Umbrian School.
Marcella
Fountain
This belongs to the 16th century and its named after Marcello Tuto, who commissioned it to be built. Because of its architectural elegance, it has always been called the "Beautiful Fountain" by the people of Assisi.
The Church
of S. Pietro
San Pietro, a 10th century Benedictan church, was rebuilt in the 12th century. It has a characteristic facade of three portals. Inside there are frescoes of the 14th and 15th centuries. The priest's house, as in all larger Romanesque churches, is located on an upper floor.
