| San Francesco is one of the most revered sanctuaries of Christendom. It was
built out of two superimposed buildings, the upper one, of Gothic style and the
lower one Romanesque. Construction started in 1228. In the crypt you will find
the simple tomb wich encloses the body of San Francesco. The greatest artists
of the end of the 13th and 14th century were called upon to pay homage to the
Saint. Amongst them were Cimabue, Giotto, the brothers Lorenzetti, and Simone
Martini. |
